Marvin Jonason

My current home is in Elyria, Ohio for the past two years. Before coming to Elyria I lived in Eureka Springs , Arkansas. I did my college under graduate at Dickinson State University, with a major in art and english. I then taught art in junior and senior high schoos for four years. During that time I worked with school theatre programs building and painting sets. I then decided to go to gratuate school at Emporia University and recieved a masters in theatre with emphasis in set design. My first college position was at Oberlin College in Ohio, developing a theatre arts program. My next position two years later was at Berea College, teaching and designing productions in the new theatre building. I then worked at two universities teaching theatre , art, and design.

After teaching clollege, I created my own company called, Renaissance 1 Design, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. the company did commercial and residential design, theatrical design, and lighting design. Through all this time continued to paint in acrylic which now that I am back in Ohio is my primary artistic endevor.

Artist Statement

I am Marvin Jonason, a painter rooted in Elyria , Ohio, where the ordinary streets and skies become portals to something deeper. My work lives at the crossroads of realism and the unknown-where the edges of a leaf echo the curve of the galaxy and the quiet of the room hums with unseen force.

I look closely at the world: the grain of wood, the movement of clouds, the way light bends around a face at dusk. ‘From this close observation, realism begins. But as I paint forms loosen, colors slip out of their boundaries and what is solid turns fluid. My work drifts between realism, impressionism, and abstract emotions-like a dream that begins with a familiar hallway and ends somewhere among the stars.

Nature is my first language. I listen to it in the trees, I see it in the river reflections, and the slow geometry of growing things. Yet behind every branch and shadow, I sense the quiet mathematics of the cosmos orbit, and its gravity. That invisible pull that shapes all things. Astrophysics is the silent script under the painting-the reminder that ever color I place is made possible by light that has traveled unimaginable distances.

I am continually working with color and light, not just as tools, but as living presences. Light carves space and reveals texture, color vibrates against memory and emotions. I think of each painting as a field where our senses meet the hidden architecture of reality. What begins as a study of landscape or a figure becomes a meeting point between what we see, what we feel, and what lies just beyond our understanding.

In the end, my paintings are invitations-to stand still, to look again, and to feel the subtle tug between earth and cosmos. They ask you to inhabit the moment where a leaf, a face, a horizon, and a distant star are all made of the same ancient light, flickering together on the surface of the canvas.
